In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My brief for this project was to create a 3-5 minute long music video which belonged to any genre i wanted and to also create two ancillary texts to accompany the video, which were in the form of a magazine advert and a digipak. My group consisted of myself Daniel Armstrong and Cara Gaffney and we immediately recognised that if we was to make our video a good as we possibly could then we would need to delegate specific roles to each individual which they was best suited to. Within my group my main roles within this task was to be cameraman for the filming process and to be the create both ancillary texts. Being a cameraman for this project taught me a lot about how both the tripod and camera function and how they can be both manipulated in a specific manner to capture anything you want and planned. Creating the ancillary texts gave me a lot of Photoshop experience which meant i learnt how to use numerous different tools and how to use each of these to create ancillary texts which were conventional and also appealed to a pacific target audience. As a group i do think we worked very well together because each of us completed our own set roles to the best standard we could meaning the combined predict was very successful.

Within this coursework task i was instructed to create a 3-5 minute long music video for a song which belonged to any genre I wanted. I also had to create ancillary texts to match this video which we're in the form of a magazine advert to promote our chosen artist and song and a six-sided digipak which the song would be sold within. A music video is defined as short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. A music video usually follows three different set styles which are performance, narrative  and concept. A performance based video is one which the artist can be seen performing the song, a narrative based video is one which follows a storyline and a concept based video is one which carries a hidden subliminal message. As well as having to conform to one of these video styles each video also belongs to a unique music genre in which they're are individual codes and conventions which they either have to conform to or challenge within their video. The song I chose to create a music video for was 'Turn Back Time' by Sub Focus; this song belongs to the dance genre which has very distinct and memorable codes and conventions. The main most recognisable conventions of the dance genre are the bright colouring frequently used and the club setting, which usually is the cause of this bright colouring. Both these conventions are evident within most stereotypical dance videos such as 'Club Can't Handle Me' by Flo Rida where the artist can be seems within a club setting with bright flashing lighting and colouring.

Within my own video and ancillary texts I both conformed and challenged the dance genre conventions. One way i conformed to the dance genre conventions was throughout the use of fast paced editing. Fast paced editing is used within the scenes in which the artist can be seen performing and DJ'ing in the club setting. This is a conventional use of editing for the dance genre as frequently fast paced editing is used to match the song and to create excitement as the audience are seeing a quick succession of shots which keeps them interested.

Another way which my video follows conventions of the dance genre is through the use of lighting. Within my video I use both brightly coloured green lighting and strobe lighting in transition scenes between shots which are shots from a club scene. This use of particular lighting is conventional to the dance genre because strobe lighting is used to emphasise the fast pace of the song any again create excitement within the audience. Brightly coloured lighting is also conventional to the dance genre as it is used to try and create a relatable club setting which the majority of our target audience have experienced and enjoyed.

Within my video another conventional micro-element i used was the miss-en-scene of costume. Within the club scenes in which the artist can again be seen performing and DJ'ing in a club setting hen is wearing a conventional costume of a plain black t shirt and a baseball cap. This is a conventional costume for a dance genre artist because the costume they wear are usually never to bold and eye-catching instead they wear understated, normal casual clothing. I chose this particular choice of conventional clothing because it means that the audience are able to relate to the artist because it is a outfit which a large majority of the audience have worn or are able to buy. This means that the target audience will then enjoy the video as they somewhat see themselves as the artist and follow his journey.

Contrastingly, within my video i also challenge the conventions of the dance genre. One way in which i challenge these conventions is through the use of a narrative style based video. This challenges the conventions of the dance genre because within the dance genre the vast majority of the videos are performance based in which the artist can be seen DJing at either a club or festival setting. Although i did feature certain scenes which conformed to this convention the majority of my video contrasted this as our video is largely narrative based which follows the story of two separate contrasting characters. One of the characters is a successful business man who is going about his working life and the other is a homeless young girl who is going about her very different day-to-day life. Choosing to use a narrative rather than a stereotypical performance based video is unconventional to the dance genre because the main aim of the genre is to create excitement but the aim of our narrative is to keep the audience intrigued throughout the whole video as well as create excitement in the conventional club scenes.

Another way in which we challenged the conventions of the dance genre was through the use of editing. Within the narrative scenes from our video we use specific filters to add to the narrative. One of theses filters which we used to show shots of the young homeless female is the 'black and white' filter. We used this particular filter to show the homeless female character because it makes the narrative more emotive as this filter makes it look more depressing as it sharply contrasts the bright lighting used in the conventional scenes. This use of editing is unconventional within the dance genre because editing is usually used to try and make the video seem more upbeat and happy rather than creating a contrasting depressing atmosphere.
