Research Into Goodwins Theory - Miss Georgiou.

1. The first part of Goodwins theory is how a music video is used to demonstrate genre characteristics, this means that within a music video the video should show certain elements which are conventional to the genre of the video, which makes it evident to the audience what genre the video belongs to and how it differs from other genres. Within Chris Browns music video for 'Loyal' numerous characteristics and stereotypes from the hip-hop genre can be seen throughout. One of these genre characteristics which can be seen throughout the video is women wearing minimal clothing and being sexual objects. Women wearing minimal clothing and being seen as a sexual object can be seen within from start to finish as every female character which features within the video can be seen wearing minimal clothing and acting provocatively. This genre characteristic can be seen in the screenshot below as the female within the picture is wearing extremely short and tight denim shorts with a low cut, revealing, black, leather top. This is a example of the minimal clothing worn by female characters within this video, it is also a example of how the characters act provocatively as she can be seen trying to seduce him. This use of mise-en-scene specifically the costume worn, combined with the characters actions, as she lusts over the male lead leads the audience to the presumption and stereotype that she is a sexual object. This is a stereotypical genre characteristic as within the hip hop genre women are frequently portrayed as sexual objects and are rarely presented as sophisticated. This is because it makes the artist seem more desirable as numerous characters of the opposite sex can be seen lusting over him which suggests he's something special.

2. The second part to Goodwins theory refers to the relationship between the music video itself and the lyrics of the song within the video, and how they can be illustrative, amplifying or contradicting. I believe this particular video aims to primarily illustrate the lyrics of the song using the visuals within the music video. This is evident immediately at the start of the video as the lyrics say "but you was blowing up her phone last night" and the main focal female can be seen holding her phone which has received a message from another love interest. The use of the micro element cinematography specifically the over the shoulder shot shows that it is the female in question as well as the phone in her hand and makes the fact that she's received a message evident. This same shot is repeated a couple times within the video and different messages can be seen with the same reoccurring theme. One of these messages reads "life is short. Have an affair" from the same sender. Both these messages demonstrate the relationship between the music video and the lyrics of the song as the song main line within the song which is frequently repeated is "these hoes ain't loyal"and the whole narrative within the song if focussed on portraying women as unfaithful to their men and shows them being provocative around other men. This is evident within these two specific shots as it specifically shows the messages which the women have sent and they all read in a way which presents them as unfaithful.

3. The third part of Goodwins theory is relationship between the video and the music of the song, and whether its illustrative, amplifying or contradicting. There is evidence of this theory throughout the video, the artist and the company in the video dance in time to the music creating a clear link between the two. This also appeals to the audience whom would adopt the feel good factor that is being displayed throughout the video. The positive emotions visible in the video also reveals that it follows the aim of amplifying the confident mood among the audience as well as the characters in the video. It could also be said that it has the aim of illustrating the location and situation in which the music should be played. The music and the visuals indicate that the genre f music should be played in a lively dance setting which would also help to amplify the enthusiastic emotes among the audience an the listeners. Another link between the music and the video is created by the pace of the editing which is used. As the music picks up tempo he pace of the editing increases, once again this amplifies the positive mood that the music should be creating.

4. The fourth part of Goodwins theory is how the demands of the record labels that will include the
needs for lots of close ups of a artist and how the artist may develop motifs which re-occur across their work. This element of Goodwins theory is evident throughout as many close ups can be seen of all the artists which feature within the song. For example immediately after the song started after 8 seconds a extreme close up is used of Lil Waynes face. The use of this cinematography shows how the record label insists on including numerous close ups as it makes the artists memorable to the target audience and they immediately recognise that the song belongs to that artist and will therefore think of that artist when they hear the song. The use of close ps is also used to appeal to the fans of the artist whom look forward to seeing their idols feature in the videos. It helps to increase the connection between the artist and the audience whom feel there is a sense of direct address through the use f close up camera shots. It also makes the artist recognisable for future appearances for new audiences whom may not be familiar with the artist before this video.

5. The fifth part of Goodwin's theory is the frequent reference to the notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This part of the theory is evident from the start of the video. Voyeuristic treatment of the female body is very common within the rap and hip hop genres due to their target audience of mostly teenage boys. The theme of the song is also about girls which enhances the portrayal of women within this particular video. It is evident
from the way the artist Chris brown deliberately looks at the girls as a way to express his and other male opinions and actions towards them. The use of exploiting the female body in music videos in the attracts the male audiences and also the female audience whom would aspire to look like the young and well portrayed women. Certain specific  camera show and angels are used to enhance the image of the female body, the exposure of the audience being able to see the female without them knowing also connects and relates to the narrative bend the song and video which is about a girl that gets caught out cheating. This gives the audience an extra insight into the video which keeps them engage throughout.

6.The final part of Goodwins theory is whether the video is performance based, narrative based or concept based. I believe this specific video is mainly performance based and partly narrative based as Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Tyga can be frequently seen singing and dancing to the camera but within these performances is a brief narrative in which a love interest is portrayed as unfaithful. The performance based element is evident throughout and can be seen specifically when Chris Brown and Lil Wayne both sing, Chris Brown is an artist whom also dances within most of his music videos which appeals to his fans. The reason that many music videos are mostly performance based is to appeal to the fans whom want to see their idol. Many also believe that the person whom performs the song should be visible doing so within the video. However, the use of the narrative is also used to attract new audiences whom would be intrigued with the storyline that follows throughout the video keeping them engaged when they my have not been before.

This research into Goodwins theory and all the individual, specific elements within this theory will help me immensely when planning my music video as the theory allows me to recognise how i want each individual element of my music video. For example i can now understand whether i want the lyrics of the song and the video to be amplifying, illustrative or contradicting. This research into this theory has also increased my knowledge of how you can manipulate each of these 6 elements to create the exact video which you planned and now i am able to plan my video with an increased knowledge of how to create it and a rough idea of how the final product will be.
