Research Into Music Channels - Miss Georgiou.

MTV
MTV was one of the first music channels. The target audience for MTV is aimed at people aged between 12-30, the reason for such a wide range of ages is because of the type of music that the channel plays. The genre of music it plays is pop and chart music, music that is family friendly and current and up to date. Artists that often feature on the music channel are ones such as Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and Katy Perry. These are very popular artists and attract not only the younger ages but also the older generation which is again linking back to the target audience. The channel is also used as a form of branding and advertising, because of the popularity of the channel, artists use the channel as a way to get themselves and their songs recognised to a large audience. The logo uses a very simple font in bass black and white colours, the simplicity attracts the audience an the 'tv' graffiti font is what is what attracts a young wide audience along with the commercial genre of music that is played.

KERRANG
Kerrang has an older target audience than MTV, aimed at people around the age of 15-25. This is because the type of music is rock, which appeals to a smaller audience than popular chart music. some of the artists that regularly feature on the channel are rock bands such as Kings Of Leon, Linkin Park, The Pretty Reckless and Twin Atlantic; these are the four most regularly played artists on the channel. The channel is used as a form of branding in a similar way to MTV, artists use Kerrang as a way to popularise themselves and their songs to an audience that are most likely to enjoy their style of music. The logo has a distressed look which emphasises the rock genre of mud that is played on the channel, it also attracts the audience that the channel is aiming for as they will like the logo. the colouring is black and white which is almost stereotypical of rock music where black is a very popular colour.

4 MUSIC

4 Music is a relatively new music channel only being formed in 2008. 4 Music has a very broad, mainstream target audience, similar to MTV's, of 10-30 year olds. This is because, like MTV, 4 Music often features shows which documnt the charts, therefore the music which feature will usually be pop. This type of music will attract a wide audeince as it is usually very catchy and features no swearing therefore is suitable for the younger audeinces. Artists such as Taylor Swift, Pharrell Williams and One Direction regularly feature on the channel as they usually are in the UK top 40 singles and all belong to the pop genre and therefore attract large audiences. The channel is used as a form of branding much like how MTV is as they both play similar music and therefore have a similar target audience. Because of this artists use 4 Music as a way of getting their music heard by a large, mainstream audience who are interested in a wide variety of music. The logo used is extremely important in appealling to their target audience as they use a quirky pink colour which appeals to the large number of young girls who are stereotypically interested in pop music. I belive the font as well also appeals to a young audience as it is also quite eccentric and edgy. As well as this it also uses the memorable image of a '4' to refer to their founding
company of Channel 4.

MAGIC
Contrasting to the other three music channels which i have just analysed 'Magic' has a much older target audience then them as it is mainly focussed on appealing to the older market of the 40+ audience. It has specifically targeted this group of people as within the music television channels there was no other channels which directly targeted this group of people and instead all the other channels were focussed on appealing to a much smaller audience. The music which features on this channel comes from a wide range of eras with artists coming from the 80s, 90s and even some from todays music but what they all have in common is the easy listening of their music which is what this channel is famous for. Examples of these artists are Elton John, ABBA and Ed Sheeran who are three of the most frequently played artists on this channel as they each have lots of songs which appeal to Magics target audience as they produce 'easy listening' music and also share the same target audience as the channel. The way in which this channel is used as a form of branding contrasts how other channels such as MTV are used as a form of branding as Magic doesn't appeal to the mainstream audience of young kids by playing pop music, instead Magic appeals to the more mainstream audience of the older generation who are more interested in slower older music. Magics logo is very good at appealing to their specific target audience as it is extremely basic, this means that it appeals to the older generation as it just says the channel name in a normal colour with nothing else going on which means they know exactly what it is rather being left confused by other more complex logos. The font is essential in making this logo as successful as it is as they chose a very easy on the eye font which looks rather innocent and honest. This could be a representation of the easy listening music which also shares these stereotypes.

CLUBLAND TV
The final music channel which i have chosen to analyse is 'Clubland TV'. Clubland TV has a target audience of 16-25 year olds, this is because the people who are usually interested in this genre of music are individuals who go out clubbing and partying and enjoy the upbeat excitement of the genre. This differs to the much younger target audience of the pop TV channels who enjoy catchy songs and the older target audience of Magic who enjoy the more relaxing songs. To appeal to this specific target audience Clubland TV plays only electronic dance music and based their whole channel soupy around this genre, this is because if they based their channel around just one specific genre than their target audience will know that this channel is always playing the genre of music which they enjoy therefore they will always tune in to this channel to find this genre rather than watching channels which show a variety of genres such as Chart Show TV. They also recognised that this genre of music is rapidly increasing in popularity more than any other genre and their target audience is also very dedicated to this genre. Clubland TV features many artists from this specific genre such as Calvin Harris, David Guetta and Avicci these three particular artists frequently feature on this channel because they are the most successful artists within the genre therefore fans of this genre wish to see them. The branding of this channel is extremely significant as Clubland TV is part of the Clubland brand which is one of the market leaders within the dance genre and stages numerous massive live events, has produced many dance genre compilation albums and has its own radio station, as well as TV channel. This branding is very important for the success of this TV channel as the target audience who have previously been fans of there other products and services are aware that the company is very good at broadcasting this genre and therefore they will watch the channel knowing that it is likely to play what they are interested in. Clubland TV's logo is very successful in appealing to their specific target audience as it is very conventional to the dance gene as it uses a very unique and edgy font as it uses dots to write each letter. The effect of this is that the target audience will immediately associate this type of font with the dance genre and therefore if they are fans of this genre than they will watch this TV channel.

This research into music channels was very helpful in giving me a further understanding of the music industry and giving me a better understanding of how music channels differ. It was also very helpful in giving me knowledge on how to appeal to a specific target audience and how numerous individual elements can be manipulated to appeal to a particular group of people.

  1. You have made a start in identifying a variety of music channels that appeal to a variety of audiences and you have also started to consider the purpose of each channel, by commenting on the target audience, artists that feature and the role of the logo. But the points that you have included are too vague and basic and this is because you have not explored the purpose of each point in enough detail, which can be achieved by focusing more on the role of the audience.

You also need to analyse 2 more music channels from a variety of genres and to include the summary points, to demonstrate further understanding of the task and the role of the music industry.

  2. This post now demonstrates some proficient understanding of music channels appeal to their target audience and this is because you have explored a variety of channels, to demonstrate your understanding further.

Within your summary, you need to explore the role of MTV further and how it is broken down into different genres and how this company dominates the music industry.
