Music Video Storyboards - Miss Georgiou.

What is the purpose of a storyboard?
How did you use your primary and secondary research that you carried out, to plan your music video?
How did you and your group storyboard your music video?
How did you share the responsibility?
Did you follow your storyboards, or did you make changes?

We created a storyboard within our planning process to aid us when filming and allow us to easily recognise how we are going to use each specific micro-element when filming each shot. This meant that our filming process was much more efficient as every individual within the group knew exactly what we needed to film and how we can easily, quickly and successfully film each specific shot, as we had previously thoroughly planned each unique shot.

Both the primary and secondary research we carried out prior to creating our storyboard was very extremely useful when we planned our storyboard as it gave us a vast amounts of knowledge of what to include in a dance music video which we previously didn't have. Our research taught us what is conventional and unconventional to the dance genre, this mean we immediately knew how to conform to these or challenge them and how we can use each micro-element to either create a conventional or diverse video. The research we carried out also allowed us to recognise how each specific micro-element effects the audience and how we can then manipulate these micro-elements in a way which will be beneficial in creating the exact video we want. We was also able to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each video style (performance, narrative and concept) and therefore we was able to decide which style we believed would be best for our video. Following this research we had a vivid idea of the video which we wanted to create and how we can successfully create this video.

To storyboard our video me and my group thoroughly discussed each individual shot and planned every micro-element and roughly drew the mise-en-scene of each shot. To create as descriptive of plan as possible me and my group discussed and recorded what location, actors, lighting, cinematography and iconography will be used within each shot, as well as a brief description of the narrative within each shot and the actions of he characters. As well as this we also drew a rough sketch of what the shot will look like which allowed us to easily picture what we imagined and how these shots would look in a chronological sequence.

To ensure that each individual of group's ideas got recognised we had to share the responsibility of the storyboarding to make sure that we created the best storyboard we possibly could between us. To do this we had lengthy discussion of each shot and debated every shot before we came to a decision of what we believed would be the most suitable and appropriate shot. Following agreement of the content of each shot one member of our group then recorded within the storyboard what micro-elements and mis-en-scene elements will be used, once this was finished we was then able to distribute the drawing within the storyboard between all three group members, as all they had to do was roughly draw what had been drew below, this sharing of responsibility made our storyboarding process more time efficient.

When we finally filmed our video we did follow our storyboard very closely because we was happy with what we had planned within our storyboard and believed that we had created a very good dance music video. This meant that we exactly filmed every single shot we planned exactly to the storyboard but despite this we did film numerous new different shots which was unplanned, we did this because when we was within the setting we got more inspiration and ideas and therefore filmed numerous shots which we believe could seamlessly fit into our storyboard and hopefully improve the final product.

  1. This post demonstrates a proficient understanding of why storyboards are essential to consider within a production.

Aim to refer back to the research that you carried out in further detail, by referring to examples to show why you decided on storyboarding your music video in a specific way.
