Planning Digipak - Miss Miller

A digipak differs to a standard cd case because a standard cd case consists of just a front cover and track list on the back with the cd inside the plastic container, where as a digipak contains further information about the artist. This method of packaging is successful in building a relationship with the audience as it stereotypically includes numerous personal items such as exclusive images and a artists note, this means that the audience who purchase the digipak have a stronger bond with the artist as they believe that the content is specifically for each individual, as it is brought by the select minority of the audience, making it feel more personal. This further promotes the artist as many of the audience would like to feel this bond with the artist and seek a more personal relationship than one which a standard jewell cd case provides. For this reason i will be creating a digipak for my artist "Sub Focus", which will be 6 sides and consist of a front cover, a track list, artist notes and images of the artist. Planning this digipak is essential in ensuring that it is effective upon the audience as i have done a vast amount of research to further my understanding of what is conventional and unconventional within a dance genre digipak and gain knowledge on what is appealing to our target audience and the effect it has on them.

The colours which i plan to use within my digipak are conventional to the dance genre as i plan to use a variety of bright bold colours which will be influential throughout my digipak as it will be seen either as the dominant background image or play a lesser role within the focal image. The use of bright colours within my video will appall to my target audience as it will immediately grab their attention as the bright colours will make it stand out. The fact that the colours i have chosen to use are conventional to the genre also means that fans of the genre will immediately recognise that it belongs to the dance genre and therefore will be interested in it straight away.

Within my digipak the majority of the images which i plan to use will be images of the artist. These images of the artist will be seen on the front cover and included within the digipak as exclusive images. This use of images is frequently used within the dance genre as it effective appeals to the target audience as they will be interested in it if they see a artist they recognise. Another image which i plan to use is a clock as it links to the title of our chosen song 'Turn Back Time' and therefore makes the title of the song more memorable if the audience have a image to associate it with.

The layout i plan to use within my digipak is contrasting within each page as the front cover is going to have a complex layout with lots of bright colours, images and different use of typography this is to ensure that the audiences attention is immediately drawn to the digipak. This contrasts the layout which i plan to use for the rest of the digipak which will be rather plain as both the track listing and the artists notes will be written in the centre of the page with nothing else on the page. The pages with exclusive images will also be plain and will just feature a individual image on each page.

The typography i plan to use will again be conventional to the genre as i plan to use a edgy, futuristic font which will be presented in bright colours and extremely large, bold font. Using edgy and futuristic font will appeal to our chosen audience as it is a representation of the artist and the song. Using bright colours with a large bold font will ensure that the audience see it and remember it. I will use this specific type of typography to present a specific style of language which will consist of numerous imperatives and persuasive language devices with the aim of promoting my audience to buy it. For example i will include the phrases "out now"and "number 1 album" which will both motivate the audience to buy the album.

The planning of my digipak was helpful because it showed me exactly what i wish to include within my digipak and allowed me to recognise what specific images i need to take in order for them to be successful and effective within my digipak. It also gave me a idea of how i can use PhotoShop to create the digipak which i have planned.

  1. You have provided a basic analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen some elements to use within your digipak.

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you state whether you will include a personal message/acknowledgment from the artist and why
    2) Make sure you explain all elements fully in terms of what they create for the audience and how it will help promote the artist - your points are too brief and summed up
    3) Elaborate on some of your points by explaining how you want elements used to represent and promote the artist
    4) Make sure you cover all bullet points: conventions of the genre etc.
    5) You need to talk about all 6 sides of the digipak
    6) Include a picture of your drawing
