Within a music video the editing styles in which they use is essential in adding to the atmosphere of the video and emphasising the pace of both the song and the video. Although it is key within the majority of genres the editing style is more so essential within our chosen genre of dance as the editing which is used within this genre is extremely conventional and very similar types of editing are used across the genre and this type of editing is very memorable to the target audience.
The first style of editing we plan to use is slow paced editing. Slow paced editing is when a jump cut is used but there is a long amount of time in between these jump cuts. This specific style of editing is appropriate for the initial narrative part of our video as within this specific part of the narrative we are trying to set the scene as dark and depressing which is a representation of the characters emotions. Slow paced editing successfully achieves this because the long time between the cuts makes the video rather dull, basic and boring. This specific type of editing is unconventional to the dance genre because this genre is usually performance based therefore fast paced editing is used to create excitement but contrastingly we plan to create a depressing atmosphere so using slow paced editing is more appropriate and suitable as the narrative will be slow paced therefore we plan to use slow paced edition to emphasise and mirror this which contrasts to a conventional performance based video. This particular editing style doesn't directly effect the artist as he doesn't feature within this section of the video but the fact that this unconventional form of editing to use may suggest to the audience that the artist is original and diverse as he has challenged the conventions and hasn't followed the set guidelines for a dance video. The emotions which this particular form of editing evokes may also suggest to the audience that the artist is rather emotional and deep as usually within dance videos there are no emotions involved.
Contrastingly we also plan to use fast paced editing. Fast paced editing is when numerous jump cuts are used in quick succession. We plan to use this type of editing during the club scene of our video as during this segment of the video we aim to create a conventional club scene which means we have to present a fast paced scene to the audience and evoke excitement within the audience. Therefore fast paced editing is the most fitting editing style as the quick succession of the cuts emphasises the fast pace as the audience are constantly seeing new shots and therefore constant engaged rather than watching the same shot for a long period of time. This is the most conventional type of editing within the dance genre as it is frequently used within the club setting as it closely mirrors the strobe lighting and the fast music which creates for a extremely exciting and up beat atmosphere. This editing will represent the artist as exciting and may suggest that his performances and lifestyle are very fast paced and hectic.
Another type of editing which we plan to use is a time lapse. A time lapse is when the exact same shot is filmed for a long duration of time then this same shot is then rapidly sped up. We plan to use this editing to show the young homeless girl sitting on the floor at a train station and capture the large amounts of people who walk past. So when sped up the audience will see the character who is staying still and hasn't moved from the same position which contrasts the people who will be sped up and therefore seen rushing passed, almost like a blur. This shot will have numerous connotations which will represent the character, one of these is that within a short space of time we are able to show the audience that she spends a lot of her time here and that is her life, which will cause them to feel sympathetic towards the character. This type of editing also links to our song which is titled 'Turn Back Time' as this shot shows she has spent a lot of time there which she wasted and now wants to change that.
To conclude the editing which is used within a video is vital in creating a specific atmosphere within each specific scene. We plan to use the editing to emphasise the pace of each individual setting and scene within our video which will evoke specific emotions within the audience and allow for us to dictate the pace which will benefit our narrative immensely as the audience will be able to see the contrast between the two editing styles which will evidently show the progression within the narrative. The editing styles will allow us to build a relationship between us and our target audience because both the slow paced editing and fast paced editing have contrasting effects on the audience which both help form a bond with the audience.
This post demonstrates proficient planning techniques, which is evident through the editing styles that you have started to consider for your music video. It is also clear to see that you have focused on following the conventions of dance and also subverting it.
ReplyDeleteAim to relate your examples back to the lyrics of your song to demonstrate further planning techniques and to show further understanding of why you have decided to include a certain style.
