The lighting an colours used within a music video are key within any genre but are more so essential in videos which belong within the dance genre. This is because lighting and colours is one of the most memorable micro-elements used within the genre as they are used in a specific manner which differs from most other genres, making them unique. The dance genre is famed for its use of lighting as they stereotypically use bright flashing lights to recreate the club setting and help dictate the pace of a video.

The main lighting which will be used throughout the narrative element of our video will be the natural lighting which will vary from daytime to nightie throughout our storyline. This type of lighting is appropriate for this specific part of the video because it makes the storyline more realistic and believable as the characters will be seen in a setting which would only be affected by the natural lighting and no artificial lighting. The fact that the narrative becomes more believable means that the audience are more likely to sympathise with the characters, especially during the night time scenario's, as the dark lighting will make it evident to the audience that the character is homeless which will cause them to feel sorry for the character and therefore become more enticed in the narrative as they want the character to get out of this tough situation. This type of lighting is considered unconventional to the dance genre, as the genre stereotypically only uses the bright flashing lights of a club setting, but recently numerous artists have been creating more diverse videos which are either narrative or concept based which usually means they use the natural outside lighting to help tell a story. This lighting presents our artist as creative and unique as it is a unconventional use of lighting within the dance genre and this diversity suggests to the audience that he is original and clever enough to think of his own ideas and concepts.

The other lighting we will use within our dance music video is bright flashing lighting. To achieve this we will have a really dark scene then we will inject short bursts of brightly coloured lighting in quick succession. The effect of this is that it successfully replicates a club setting which then evokes happy memories within the audience as the majority of our target audience have probably experienced a similar setting. This means that the audience will enjoy watching a video which replicates this scenario as they picture themselves in this situation which means that both the characters and artist become more relatable as they have something in common with the audience because they all enjoy the club scenario - this furthers the relationship between the artists, characters and audience. Another effect of this type of lighting is that it can emphasise the pace of the song as the lights can be flashed at quicker parts of the song and slowed for slower parts, this prompts the audience to dance as the fast pace of the song is more vivid. This is a extremely conventional use of lighting within the dance genre as this is the micro-element which the target audience closely associate with this genre and this use of lighting can be seen in most conventional dance videos.
To conclude i believe that this specific use of lighting will be very beneficial to our specific dance music video as it allows for the narrative to be as interesting and intriguing as possible as well as ensuring that the club scenes are as energetic and as exciting as possible. Both uses of lighting help the artist build a bond with the audience in contrasting manners as the natural lighting shows his diversity and creativity and the conventional strobe lighting presents him as relatable.
This post demonstrates some planning techniques. It is clear to see that you have considered the narrative of your music video and the various styles of lighting that you would like to include, by also considering the conventions of dance and how you are going to follow and subvert it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, you need to be more specific with your examples and refer to more detailed examples as to where the lighting styles will be seen and why? Therefore you need to refer back to your storyboard to complete this post.
What colours will you use and why?
