Planning Magazine Advert - Miss Miller.

Within a promotional campaign of a album or single in which a artist undergo's, in order for them to raise awarness of the product they are promoting, they often advertise their material in a magazine. Magazine adverts are extremely important within this promoting as a magazine advert has the ability to reach a very vast audience and can specifically target their unique target audience, as an artist can chose which magazine their content should be advertised in and therefore can make sure their specific target audience see's the advert by placing it in a magazine with the same demographic or contrastingly make the advert be seen by a wider new audeince by placing it in a mainstream magazine. Planning a magazine advert is vital in insuring that this advert is appealling as possible to our target audience and getting as many people as possible, who see the advert, to b uy the album. This means that as a group we have had to thoroughly plan each individual element within our advert to either conform withe the dance genre's codes and conventions or contrastingly challenge these codes and conventions.

Our magazine advert consists of both the artists name and the album name 'Sub Focus' as the focal point written in bold black writing in the middle of the advert with the artists colourful circle logo on the left side of this name. Directly underneath this focal point on the right of the page is the text 'The New Album' in bold red writing and underneath that, also on the right, is the term 'including' in a slightly smaller font and a contrasting colour of black. Then at the bottom of this text, still on the right of the page, is the single name 'Turn Back Time' which is in a much larger font then the rest of the text and coloured in sky blue. Next to this single name is the only image within the advert which is a picture of a plain, basic clock, which is in black and white and is the same size as the large single name. Then finally at the bottom of the advert is spectrum of bold colouring which gradates from one bold colour to another. We planned to use the artists and albums name as the biggest most focal point of the advert by making it in bold black colour and positioning it in the middle of the advert. This means that it is the first thing the audience see which is likely to ptompt them to read on as well as making it as memorable as possible. We believed that the best way to ensure that it was the focal point was by making it as big as possible and positioning it right in the middle of the advert. The colour black also emphasises its dominance as it is unconventional to the dance genre and it contrasts the rest of the bright colurs used within the advert and the white background which is directly behind it. The next most dominant element within the advert is the colourful circle logo which is positioned overlapping the artists name, on the left side, we decided to make this as prominant as possible as it is a symbol which is assocaited with the artist and therefire if his fans see this then they will be interested in the rest of the advert. This image is also very colurful which will catch the eye of a large audience who do not recognise the logo which will create new fans. The colours used within this symbol are conventional to the dance genre as they are very bright which is a convention to the dance genre as bright colouring is seen within most dance videos and adverts, this means that fans of the dance genre will also be interested in the advert as they will recognise the conventional use of bright colours.

Underneath this focal element we will include the typography of 'The New Album', this will be in a much smaller font than the artists name as it is less appealing to the target audience but this quote is key to the promotion of the album as it makes it very clear and evident to the audience that he is releasing a new album which would encourage them to buy it as they are likely to be a fan of the artists if they have carried on reading thus far. Because of this importance we have decided to position it to the right of the page slightly below the centre which means its the next thing the audience see, within the advert. This part of the text will be in red as it makes it stand out to the audience, it also connotes many things such as passion, love and danger. This use  of typography is conventional to the dance genre as within magazine adverts promotion is the main aim and this quote is entirely used to promote the album and therefore is often positioned in a focal position, the colour of this text is often red because of its numerous connotations which represent the artist and the album and it also stands out.

Then below this we will include the name of the single 'Turn Back Time' this will be the next largest text as it means the audience will be more likely to remember the name of the song this is conventional as artists aim to make it very clear what the name of the song is as they are promoting it. This phrase will be in sky blue, this colour again has numerous connotations which contrast the connotations of the red as it is more subtle and less aggressive which could be a representation of the artist. It also is again a bright colour which is conventional to the genre as they use colours which are used within the genre are stereotypically eye catching and exciting. Next to this text, on the left, will be the image of a very basic and plain clock. This image will link to the name of the song 'Turn Back Time' which will help the audience remember the name of the song through the use of a visual. It will also connote numerous messages to the audience which link to the narrative within both the song and the video which the audience could possible relate to. This use of images is conventional to the dance genre as they frequently use a image which relates to the song as it makes the song title more memorable but the way in which we plan to use this image is unconventional to the dance genre as the image which links to the song is usually very large and is the focal point of the advert where as our image is contrastingly much smaller and less noticeable. We plan to use it in this specific way because we believe that this image is not as significant and is not very appealing in comparison to other elements within our advert.

At the bottom of our magazine advert will be a spectrum of bright colours which gradate across the entire width of the bottom part of the magazine advert. We plan to use this because it brings loads of colour to the advert making it stand out and is extremely eye-catching, this means that everyone who see's the advert, even if they are not fans of the artist, will stop to look at the advert which means they are more likely to buy it. These bright colours all begin at one point at the bottom of the typography then spread out as they get lower down the page, this means that it draws the audiences attention towards the text which mean they read the key promotional text which gives them information on what it is. This spreading effect also is a representation of the lights within a club setting, which is the stereotypical dance genre setting and features within our video, as the lights would usually all come from a similar focal point which is the artist then spread out across the audience. This means that people who have been within this particular setting will recognise this and relate to it, which makes it more appealing to them. This element of our advert is extremely conventional to the dance genre as the bright colours are one that are used within all conventional dance videos and a micro-element which is closely associated to the genre as it can be seen through many micro-elements within a dance video such as lighting, costume, colour tints and artists image. The fact that it also represents the conventional club lighting also means that it conforms with these codes and conventions as we have directly tried to replicate the most memorable dance micro-element which ensures that our target audience immediately recognise the genre of our advert.

To conclude this planning of our magazine advert will be very helpful when we make our final magazine advert as this planning process has given us a clear idea of the images we need to capture and how we can capture them in the most appealing manner for our audience. It has also helped us understand how we need to manipulate these images within photoshop to make them as appropriate as possible through the use of colours which can be added during this photoshop process.

  1. You have provided a sound analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen certain elements to use within your advert, and what you hope they will portray.

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you state whether you will include a personal message/acknowledgment from the artist and why
    2) Make sure you explain all the connotations fully (don't just say there are various connotations - give examples of what they could be!)
    3) Elaborate on some of your points by explaining how you want elements used to represent and promote the artist
    4) Remember your artist's name will be different to the artist you are copying! - say that this will be different for your actual advert and you have used this as an example

  2. You have elaborated on some of your points, explaining what the connotations could be to an extent; however, you still need to elaborate on some of the points further and explain how it represents your artist/genre overall.
